Fishing With a Purpose: Discover FishRec Challenges and Explore More of Utah
By Tiafau Purcell

Fishing is about more than catching the biggest fish. Discover seven free FishRec Challenges that encourage anglers to explore Utah, catch new species, track their progress, and earn digital achievement badges.
What if your next fishing trip was about more than catching fish? FishRec Challenges give anglers new goals to pursue, from exploring different Utah waters to catching species they've never landed. With seven free challenges, progress tracking, and digital achievement badges, there's a new reason to get outside and go fishing.
Give Your Next Fishing Trip a New Purpose
Most anglers have their favorite fishing spots. Maybe it's the reservoir where you know which shoreline produces, the river you've fished for years, or the mountain lake you visit every summer. There's nothing wrong with returning to familiar water, especially when you know the fishing can be good. But sometimes, fishing somewhere new is exactly what makes the experience memorable.
What if you spent your next trip trying to catch a species you've never caught before? Or planned a weekend around fishing a different region of Utah? Maybe you've always wanted to catch all four of Utah's native cutthroat trout, but never had a reason to start.
That's the idea behind FishRec Challenges. Instead of measuring every fishing trip by how many fish you caught or how big they were, challenges give you something different to work toward. Some can be completed in a single day, while others might take months or even years. They encourage you to explore unfamiliar waters, learn new techniques, and experience more of what Utah fishing has to offer.
And the best part? All current seven FishRec Challenges are currently free to participate in.
What Are FishRec Challenges?

FishRec Challenges are fishing goals built around exploring Utah's waters, catching different species, developing your skills, and accomplishing something beyond your usual fishing routine.
Each challenge has its own objective. Some focus on the types of water you fish, others on the regions you explore or the species you catch. A few are designed for experienced anglers looking for a more ambitious goal, while others are approachable enough for someone just getting started. As you log qualifying catches in FishRec, the app tracks your progress toward each challenge. You can see which objectives you've completed, what's still left, and how close you are to finishing.
Complete a challenge and you'll earn a digital achievement badge, with your accomplishment displayed on the challenge page alongside other anglers who have completed it. Think of these as fishing milestones. You might earn your first badge by fishing five different types of water, then decide to work toward catching more species or exploring new regions.
You don't have to pursue every challenge at once, and there's no pressure to finish quickly. Most FishRec Challenges are lifetime goals, so you can work toward them as your fishing adventures take you across Utah.

Seven Challenges. Plenty of Reasons to Go Fishing.
FishRec currently offers seven fishing challenges, each with its own objectives, difficulty level, and completion requirements. And we'll be adding more challenges soon!
FishRec Water Type Challenge
Have you ever considered how differently a lake fishes compared with a river or creek?
The Water Type Challenge encourages anglers to experience five distinct types of Utah waters: lakes, rivers, ponds, reservoirs, and creeks. To complete the challenge, catch at least one fish in each water type.
You might be comfortable casting from a reservoir shoreline but have never tried fishing a small mountain creek. Or perhaps you spend most of your time fly fishing rivers and haven't explored Utah's community ponds. Each environment offers a different fishing experience, and learning how to approach them can make you a more versatile angler.

Difficulty: Advanced
Time limit: Lifetime
Goal: Catch a fish in all five water types.

FishRec Regions Challenge
Utah is an incredibly diverse place to fish. From alpine lakes in the Uinta Mountains to warmwater fisheries in Southern Utah, the landscape changes dramatically depending on where you go.
The Regions Challenge encourages you to experience that variety by catching at least one fish in each of FishRec's six Utah fishing regions: Northern Utah, Wasatch Front, Uinta Mountains, Central Utah, Southern Utah, and Western Utah.
This challenge is an opportunity to plan trips beyond your home waters and discover destinations you might otherwise overlook. You don't need to complete it in one summer. Make it a long-term goal and check off regions as your fishing adventures take you across the state.

Difficulty: Advanced
Time limit: Lifetime
Goal: Catch a fish in each of Utah's six FishRec regions.
Utah Sport Fish Challenge
How many different species of fish have you caught in Utah? Most anglers have a few favorites, but Utah offers far more variety than trout alone.
The Utah Sport Fish Challenge is one of FishRec's most ambitious lifetime achievements. Its objective is to catch all 31 sport fish species recognized by the challenge, from native cutthroat trout subspecies to warmwater gamefish.
That means learning how to target fish you may never have pursued before. You might need to research unfamiliar waters, experiment with new techniques, or travel to different parts of Utah. It's not something most anglers will complete in a weekend, and that's what makes it interesting. Every new species becomes another milestone in a much larger fishing adventure.

Difficulty: Expert
Time limit: Lifetime
Goal: Catch all 31 listed sport fish species.

Utah Cutthroat Slam
Utah's native cutthroat trout have a remarkable history, and pursuing them can take anglers into some of the state's most beautiful fishing country.
The FishRec Utah Cutthroat Slam asks anglers to catch four native cutthroat trout subspecies: Bonneville, Colorado River, Yellowstone, and Bear River cutthroat trout. Each fish must be caught within a verified watershed associated with its subspecies. Unlike most FishRec Challenges, this one also requires catch photographs and GPS coordinates to verify the achievement (FishRec will verify watershed against catch photo metadata).
It's an opportunity to learn about Utah's native fish, the watersheds they evolved in, and why protecting these fisheries matters. FishRec's in-app challenge is separate from the official Utah Cutthroat Slam conservation program. Anglers participating in the official program should follow its own registration, documentation, and eligibility requirements.

Difficulty: Expert
Time limit: Lifetime
Goal: Catch all four required cutthroat subspecies in verified watersheds.
Verification: Catch photo, GPS coordinates, and watershed match.

FishRec All Waters Challenge
Some anglers have a favorite lake. Others want to fish every lake they can find. The All Waters Challenge is built for anglers who love discovering new places. Its objective is to catch at least one fish at every water currently tracked by FishRec.
That's 530 Utah fishing waters, ranging from well-known reservoirs and rivers to community ponds, mountain lakes, and smaller fisheries.
This is one of the most ambitious goals in FishRec, and it's meant to be a long-term adventure rather than a race. Each new water becomes another place you've experienced and another opportunity to learn something about Utah's fisheries. As FishRec continues expanding its water database, the challenge's eligible-water list may also evolve. Always check the challenge page for the current requirements.

Difficulty: Expert
Time limit: Lifetime
Goal: Catch a fish at all 530 currently listed waters.

Trout Grand Slam
Think you know your trout? The Trout Grand Slam puts your trout fishing skills to the test with a single-day objective: catch a brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, and cutthroat trout within the same calendar day.
That takes more than luck. Each species has different habitat preferences and feeding behavior, so completing the challenge requires planning, understanding where those fish occur, and choosing the right techniques.
You might need to fish multiple waters or find a destination that offers opportunities for several species. Unlike the lifetime challenges, all four catches must happen on the same calendar day, and catch photographs are required for verification.

Difficulty: Advanced
Time limit: Same calendar day
Goal: Catch brown, rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout in one day.
Verification: Catch photos and same-day catches.

Utah Lake Carp Count
Not every fishing challenge has to be about trout or trophy fish. The Utah Lake Carp Count takes a different approach by encouraging anglers to catch and remove common carp from Utah Lake and the eligible lower section of the Provo River, from West Center Street to I-15.
Common carp have contributed to ecological problems in Utah Lake, particularly by disturbing bottom sediments and aquatic vegetation. Carp management has been an important part of broader efforts to improve the lake's ecosystem.
The challenge asks anglers to catch and remove at least 10 carp from eligible waters. Unlike FishRec's other challenges, this is a catch-and-remove challenge, not catch-and-release. Participants should follow current fishing regulations and applicable fish-disposal requirements. Removing a handful of carp won't solve Utah Lake's ecological challenges on its own, but the challenge offers anglers a way to learn about the issue and participate in responsible carp removal.

Difficulty: Beginner
Time limit: Lifetime
Goal: Catch and remove 10 common carp from eligible waters.

How to Get Started With FishRec Challenges
Getting started is simple, and you don't need to purchase anything or enter a fishing tournament. Visit the FishRec Challenges page and browse the available challenges. Choose one that fits the kind of fishing you enjoy, or pick something that encourages you to try a new experience.
Each challenge page explains the objectives, difficulty, time limit, and verification requirements. Most challenges simply require logging qualifying catches, while others have additional rules. For example, the Utah Cutthroat Slam requires photographs, GPS coordinates, and confirmation that each fish was caught within the appropriate watershed. The Trout Grand Slam requires photographs of all four trout species caught on the same calendar day.
Once you've chosen a challenge, use FishRec to research waters and species that can help you complete it. As you catch fish, log your catches and track your progress. FishRec displays completed objectives, progress bars, and completion percentages so you can see how far you've come and what remains.
When you finish a challenge, your achievement is recognized with a digital badge and completion record. Completed challenge pages can also display participating anglers and their accomplishments. And if you want another reason to get outside, you can always start a new challenge.
Explore More, Respect the Resource
As FishRec continues expanding its water database and adding new challenges, there's something we want to keep at the center of the experience: responsible fishing. We want anglers to discover Utah's public waters, including places they may never have considered fishing before. But discovering more waters also comes with a responsibility to protect them.
A challenge shouldn't encourage anglers to ignore regulations, disturb sensitive habitat, or put unnecessary pressure on fragile fisheries just to earn a badge. Follow the rules for each water. Respect private property and access restrictions. Handle fish carefully, practice ethical catch-and-release where appropriate, and avoid disturbing spawning fish or their habitat.
And remember that completing a challenge doesn't require sharing the exact spot where you caught a fish. FishRec is built around helping anglers discover public waters and understand how to fish them, not publishing someone's secret hole or precise productive GPS coordinates. The more we explore, the more important it becomes to take care of the places we visit.
Your Next Fishing Adventure Starts With a Challenge
Maybe you've already caught dozens of trout but have never fished a creek. Maybe you've spent years fishing Northern Utah and want an excuse to explore the southern part of the state. Or perhaps you're ready to work toward something as ambitious as catching every sport fish species in Utah. Whatever kind of angler you are, there's a FishRec Challenge that can give your next trip a new purpose.
You don't have to be the best angler, catch the biggest fish, or finish every challenge. Start with one challenge that sounds fun and see where it leads. All current seven challenges are free, and each offers a different way to experience Utah fishing. Whether you're working toward your first badge or planning a challenge that could take years to complete, there's always another water to explore or another fish to pursue.
Pick a challenge. Make a plan. Go fishing.
